Dr. Brian Sherman
Assistant Professor
Dr. Sherman is an Assistant Professor of Psychology. Prior to joining The Citadel in 2023, Dr. Sherman worked as a clinical research scientist at the Medical University of South Carolina. At MUSC, Dr. Sherman developed a research program focused on understanding the etiology of and treatment development for substance use disorders (SUD). He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct clinical trials and human laboratory studies investigating the role of motivation, stress reactivity, and reward processing in addiction. An important aspect of Dr. Sherman’s research is understanding sex and gender differences in SUD onset, trajectory, and treatment outcomes. He has served as co-investigator on numerous federally funded studies on SUDs and treatment of SUDs, with a focus on cannabis use disorder. Prior to MUSC, Dr. Sherman worked as an addiction psychologist at the Center for Motivation and Change in New York City (2012 – 2015), where he conducted evidence-based treatments for SUDs and co-occurring trauma, mood, and anxiety disorders. Dr. Sherman is an advocate for mental health and suicide awareness on campus and in the community. His teaching interests include basic and advanced clinical counseling; adult psychopathology and differential diagnosis; and theories, biology, and treatment of addiction. Dr. Sherman is licensed in New York (2012) and South Carolina (2016).
