The Citadel will celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with events Jan. 15-16
Communities across the country will honor the life and legacy of one of the nation’s greatest leaders on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this Monday, January 15. Students, faculty and staff of The Citadel will join this celebration with a series of activities Jan. 15-16.
Activities begin early Monday morning
Monday’s activities in honor of King will kick off at 8 a.m. in the Holliday Alumni Center with a breakfast program titled “Understanding and Engaging with our Community.” The program will be led by The Citadel’s director of Multicultural Student Services, Robert Pickering, along with guests from the community.
The 2018 MLK Parade, sponsored by the YWCA of Greater Charleston and the city of Charleston, will begin at 10 a.m. The parade will run from Burke High School, next to The Citadel, to Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston on Calhoun Street. Citadel students, faculty and staff will march the parade alongside the college’s float.
In the afternoon from 1:30 – 5p.m., Citadel volunteers will gather for service-learning projects at Sweetgrass Garden, located on Johns Island, and Charles Towne Landing in honor of King.
Also in the afternoon, the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) will offer its Controversial Issues workshop in the Holliday Alumni Center. This workshop is part of the college’s commitment to supporting a diverse campus and community and aims to help individuals and groups examine controversial topics through a positive process and work toward common solutions. The training will run from 2 – 5 p.m.
The Citadel serves as host institution for MLK intercollegiate program Tuesday, January 16
On Tuesday, The Citadel will host the 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observance program from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in Summerall Chapel on Avenue of Remembrance. The program is sponsored by the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium, which is composed of representatives from Trident Technical College, Charleston Southern University, the Medical University of South Carolina and The Citadel.
The program will consist of short reflections presented by students from each of the consortium’s representatives. Each reflection will focus on this year’s theme, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Following the reflections, the representative’s gospel choirs will perform a musical selection.
During the program, individuals selected by the consortium will be recognized for their leadership, support and service. The Citadel’s 2018 recipient is Connie Book, Ph.D., provost and dean of the college who will depart to become president of Elon University in March.
Additionally, as the host institution, The Citadel will present one student with a $500 scholarship.
The program is free and open to the public.
Monday and Tuesday’s events are the beginning of The Citadel’s observance of Black History Month. More events will be announced at a future date.
