Welcome to the Office of the Commandant
Commandant’s Intent
The purpose of the Commander publishing their intent is to achieve unity of purpose behind a common vision. This intent rests on The Citadel’s mission and is framed by our core values of honor, duty, and respect.
Commandant’s Intent: Col Thomas J. Gordon, USMC (Ret.)
Mission
Our mission is to develop Principled Leaders – men and women of virtue and character – imbued with our core values of Honor, Duty, Respect. Here we build “inner-citadels” of character replenished with a deep reservoir of resiliency. Character development is a choice. You choose to submit yourself to the rigors of a four-year system, overcome personal challenges, and pursue virtue. These decisions, repeated over time become habits of thought and action that provide a framework for living a disciplined honorable life.

It's the best way to wrap the prestigious history of this institution into one meaningful object, " said Blake Giles.
