The Student Scholarly Journal of The Corps of Cadets and The Citadel Graduate College
2024 Gold Star Journal wins 3 Prestigious Awards
Our Mission
The Gold Star Journal (GSJ), which was founded in July 1996 by Dr. Suzanne Mabrouk (Chemistry Department), promotes academic excellence at The Citadel through (1) the publication of scholarly and artistic work and (2) presentations by published students at an annual conference.
Selected nonfiction papers demonstrate effective writing, research skills, and critical thinking. Featured artwork (drawings, paintings, photographs, and photo stories) commemorate the life of Citadel students both on and off campus. Photo stories depict experiences mostly through photographs, drawings, and/or paintings with optional and minimal prose. The journal is published annually for Corps Day, which occurs in mid-March.
The Gold Star Journal Endowment by Steve and Noreen Hodges, ’63
For Noreen and Steve Hodges, ’63, it was truly a magical moment when Steve discovered a copy of The Gold Star Journal on a table in Bastin Hall. They have since become involved and established the Gold Star Journal Endowment by Steve and Noreen Hodges, ’63. The fund provides financial resources to support, enhance, and sustain The Citadel’s Gold Star Journal program.
Steve retired from the US Army after serving for 22 years. Noreen worked at a Community College for 33 years, as a director of a training program for business and industry. Retiring in 2007, they immersed themselves with many local non-profits, civic organizations, and their previous elementary and high schools.
Please join Noreen and Steve Hodges as donors to this endowment.

Since 2016, The GSJ has also provided the featured authors, artists, and photographers an additional opportunity for sharing their work with the greater Citadel community, the annual Gold Star Journal Academic Conference (GSJAC). Through this experience, authors and editors hone their public speaking skills. Authors also develop their ability to speak about their subject matter to a general audience. The work of the artists and photographers is prominently displayed at the conference. The conference occurs annually the first Tuesday in April. Please consider submitting your work to The Gold Star Journal.
