Application Evaluation Criteria
This page gives criteria for evaluating applications for School of Humanities & Social Sciences Development and Presentation Grants. The Faculty Grants Committee assigns priority to applications that request support for one or more of the following activities. The criteria are not listed in order of priority; all are equally acceptable, but conference attendance including a presentation would normally have higher priority than attendance without a presentation. These criteria combine and extend the previous Citadel-wide Faculty Development and Presentation of Research grants. Proposals will be ranked according to how well they show that some of these criteria are met, and how clearly it is shown that the activity will promote the applicant’s research and teaching and benefit The Citadel. Funding will depend on the ranking.
- Participation at meetings where the applicant delivers a paper about research, pedagogy, or classroom performance, or participates in a panel discussion on such matters.
- Training in multimedia and computerized classroom techniques. [If you seek travel funds to attend conferences concerning multimedia training, you must be sure to show how the training does not duplicate services that could be provided on campus by ITS.]
- Activities contributing to the development of new or modifying existing courses to reflect a new learning paradigm.
- Workshops that lead to professional certification.
- Conferences or workshops promoting the acquisition of knowledge or facilitate collaborations that will enhance the applicant’s research activities.
- Activities that develop new and/or improved assessment procedures for improving and/or evaluating student learning outcomes.
The SHSS Faculty Grants Committee does not fund requests for:
- Program development initiatives by department chairs.
- Officers attending professional meetings. (Contact the Provost.)
- Travel funds for attendance at professional meetings by award recipients.
- Acquisition of software for classroom instruction. (Contact ITS or your department chair if criterion 7 is not met.)
- Purchase of hardware or other equipment.
- Purchase of books or journals, except those required by attendance at a funded conference, short course, or workshop.
Application Form
Applicants must use the current application form and provide all indicated information within the document.
Funding Limits
Annual funding for the Development and Presentation Grant is limited to $5,000 per person. Multiple applications are permitted, but the approval of subsequent applications may be subject to budgetary constraints.
Supported Expenses
Faculty Development & Presentation Grants support the professional development of faculty by funding the presentation of faculty research and opportunities to improve their teaching and research. Read the specific Criteria for Faculty Development & Presentation Grants before completing an application. The application must address at least one of the listed criteria. Also, note the types of expenditures that are excluded under these criteria. Activities which do not meet the listed criteria may be approved only in rare exceptions and require extraordinary justification. General restrictions on expenses may be found in the Budget Guidelines and FAQ.
Review Process
The school’s Faculty Grants Committee will rank applications on a scale of 0 to 3, where 0 means do not fund, 1 means fund if resources are available, 2 means recommended for funding, and 3 means recommended with a high priority. The committee will consider the clarity with which the proposed activities are presented, the degree to which the criteria are met, the clarity with which the proposed benefits to the applicant and The Citadel are presented, the apparent feasibility of the proposed activity, and cost effectiveness of the proposed expenditures.
