In keeping with our core values of Honor, Duty, Respect, The Citadel continues to take steps to create a more transparent and responsive student complaint process. The student complaint procedures outlined below are established to address concerns that arise within The Citadel community. In addition, The Citadel has a federal obligation to track student complaints to help monitor and improve the quality of our operations and services.
When a student encounters a problem on campus or feels they have been treated unfairly, the student should first try to resolve the issue informally with the faculty/staff member or department directly involved. Many issues can be resolved by making an appointment with a faculty or staff member to calmly and honestly communicate any concern(s). Students are encouraged to work issues/complaints directly with the requisite chain of command (cadets), faculty or staff member at The Citadel. The Citadel is committed to an environment where open, honest communication is the expectation, not the exception. Students should feel comfortable approaching chain of command (cadets), faculty, TAC officers (cadets), and staff members when they believe there may have been violations of policies or standards.
If a student is not satisfied after working informally to resolve the concern, and resolution has not been achieved through one of the processes listed below, the student may use the form to file a formal student complaint with the Executive Director of Student Affairs.
Student Complaints
- must be initiated by the student affected and include their identifying information (not anonymous)
- are submitted via the form below, after the complaint could not be resolved informally at the individual/department level
- cannot be a request for a decision (e.g. grade change, requirement waiver, etc.), an appeal to re-examine a decision, or a grievance for which a defined process is provided, including but not limited to the processes listed below
Please note…
Other non-student type individuals (parents, relatives, employers, members of the public, etc.) are welcome to contact for assistance and support in addressing concerns related to The Citadel experience and connections to other supportive resources.
The procedures used by students who wish to register written complaints are pursuant to the general policy established by the The Citadel Board of Visitors in section VI of the College Regulations, “Investigations and Hearings for Student Violations”. Specific procedures used to implement these policies depend on whether the complaint concerns academic matters, matters of non-academic discipline, or matters regarding a violation of policies governing personal integrity, including the Cadet Honor Code. The procedures for each of these areas are published in the following places:
