This program is offered in-person or online.
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program is designed for adults who have never been certified to teach but would like to begin a career in the teaching profession. Students who successfully complete this program will obtain both a graduate-level education and recommendation for licensure to teach.

Requirements for Admission
- Graduate Application and non-refundable application fee.
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate/graduate work directly from each regionally accredited college or university.
- Undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Students must complete a program of study with content and education advisors upon acceptance before registration in classes may occur.

- EDUC 592 – Teaching Language and Literacy across Content Areas Credit Hours: 3
- EDUC 665 – Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Education Credit Hours: 3
- EDUC 501 – Methods and Materials of Middle and High School Teaching Credit Hours: 3
- EDUC 623 – Special Methods in Teaching Credit Hours: 3
- EDUC 520 – Professional Internship Credit Hours: 6
- LDRS 500 – Introduction to Principled Leadership (Graduate Requirement – Non-credit bearing)

Admission to the Internship in Teaching (EDUC 520 or PHED 620)
- Apply to The Citadel to intern two semesters prior to the Student Teaching Internship.
- Complete the teacher certification application with required fees, social security info, fingerprints for background check and state clearance.
- Successfully complete all required coursework.
- Successfully complete the Praxis II content and the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exams.
