Dr. Felice Knight specializes in African American History with an emphasis on slavery during the early national and antebellum periods. She received a B.A. in History from Furman University, an M.A. from The Citadel and College of Charleston’s joint Master of Arts in History program, and a Ph.D. in African American History from The Ohio State University.
Knight’s research focuses on institutional slavery, or the ownership and hire of slaves by universities, schools, and government institutions. She is working on a book about slave-holding and slave-hiring by municipal institutions in Charleston, South Carolina. Her publications include a contribution to Champions of Civil and Human Rights in South Carolina: Volume 1, Dawn of the Movement Era, 1955-1967 (University of South Carolina Press, 2016) and several academic reviews.
Professor Knight’s courses include Slavery, Memory, and the Making of the American South, African American History to 1865, part one of the American History survey, and the Western Civilization surveys.
Knight is Director of The Citadel’s Universities Studying Slavery Committee and a member of The Citadel’s Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Center team.
