For some, college will be a substantial shift from the military as they go from a very structured way of life to one that may seem less orderly. For others, the transition from military to civilian life hasn’t occurred yet. Whatever your situation may be, your success is very important to us. Please remember, you are not alone during this journey. The purpose of this handbook is to provide you with additional information related to campus, courses offered, and VA educational benefits. Staff located at the Veteran Student Success Center (VSSC) are dedicated to assisting you through your journey, please do not hesitate to reach out should you need anything at all!

Veteran Student Lounge
The Veteran Student Success Center (VSSC) located at 204 Richardson Ave. On The Citadel’s campus opened its doors on Veterans Day 2014. It is open to any veteran or active duty student, whether they are enrolled in online or in person classes.

Academic Coaching

Academic coaching, how is it different from advising?
Academic coaching provides students with the “soft skills” associated with success in their college experience. Academic advisors guide students through potential course work and degree requirements.

Program Elements
20-minute student and coach sessions led by the student’s needs and current challenges.
Provides student not only with assistance on developing the soft skills needed to succeed in school but connect them to internal and external resources for additional help.
Academic coaching sessions will be available online or in-person depending on the student’s preference and availability.
Time slots will be available similar to office hours with one day bi-weekly providing office hours in the evening.

Resiliency Coaching

Resilience is a person’s ability to adjust or recover from adversity or major life changes. The Resiliency Coaching Program is a voluntary program in which we strive to help you address your needs or challenges and learn new skills to overcome those challenges. Resiliency Coaching sessions can be held virtually or in person and will last about 20 minutes.

Mentorship Program
The Veteran Student Success Center (VSSC), in partnership with Citadel alumni Jim Whetstone, launched a mentorship program in Spring 2023 to connect our Veteran and Active Duty students with a member of the community who has similar interests and experience in the student’s chosen career path.
This voluntary program provides the student with an opportunity to engage in a mentorship relationship with a valued member of The Citadel and/or Charleston community. Mentees (students) will meet with their mentors on a regular basis as well as attend four (4) informational sessions throughout the school year which will cover topics such as personal finances, setting goals and leadership skills.

The Citadel’s Veteran Student Success Center (VSSC) assists service members, Veterans, and their dependents in managing their Veteran educational benefits. The Citadel offers dedicated tracks to help you achieve your education goals, whether you are pursuing a bachelor’s degree or working toward a master’s degree.

Veteran Emergency Relief Fund
The Citadel values the service of America’s Veterans and believes that Veteran students serve as powerful role models throughout the campus environment. We understand that there will be unforeseen life events that may become an obstacle to graduation.
The objective of the Emergency Relief Fund is to assist Veteran students in need. Funds may be used for such necessities as food, rent, emergency medical bills, safety needs, etc.
Eligibility Guidelines
- Student must be enrolled during the semester he/she makes the request and attending full time.
- Cumulative GPA must be 2.00 or higher.
- Student must demonstrate “emergency” financial need.
- A student must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- A brief interview or additional information may be requested.
Conditions
- The student applicant must demonstrate that emergency support is directly tied to their ability to progress in
college. - Funds are intended for a one-time emergency and will not be made to cover ongoing needs or expenses.
- Funds will not be made to cover costs related to attendance at The Citadel (tuition, fees, textbooks, parking,
etc). - Available funding ranges from $500 to $1000.

| Campus Alcohol and Drug Information Center (CADIC) | The Campus Alcohol and Drug Information Center (CADIC) provides services across three tiers of prevention. (1) Population-based education aimed at stopping substance misuse before it becomes substance abuse. (2) One-on-one small group interventions to modify substance abuse before it develops into a substance use disorder (SUD). (3) Provide relapse prevention and referrals to support groups (AA, NA, Al-Anon) and treatment providers. | Computer Labs | The Citadel has several computer labs located on campus including Bond Hall 251, 252, 256, and 262 as well as Thompson Hall 215 and 220. For labs dedicated to your major check with your college or department. The VSSC also has a small computer lab, as well as loaner laptops. | Counseling Center | The Citadel Counseling Center provides professional, confidential, short-term counseling to currently enrolled students at no charge. Personal and substance abuse prevention counseling are available by appointment. In the event of an emergency, counselors are also available to provide crisis intervention without an appointment. | Federal Work Study Program | The Federal Work Study program provides part-time employment for degree seeking students who can demonstrate financial need. Interested students must complete a FAFSA and contact the Office of Financial Aid for eligibility requirements. | Office of Financial Aid | Financial Aid is available to those who qualify. All students are encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year. Following completion, you will receive information about the financial aid available to you. | Ombudsperson | The Citadel’s Ombudsperson is a neutral party who helps students resolve disputes and concerns informally and confidentially. When possible, the Ombudsperson will work to settle grievances and seek solutions to problems outside the college’s formal problem resolution systems. | ||
| Patricia McArver Public Speaking Lab | The Public Speaking Lab’s goal is to help all students develop confidence and public speaking abilities that will set them up for success while at The Citadel and their professional careers after graduation. They help individuals develop and organize their message, then coach them on their delivery.
