Physical Fitness
Physical fitness is a core principle of the Corps of Cadets at The Citadel. New cadets must be physically ready and healthy before attending The Citadel because of the demands during the first year. Below is in-depth information about necessary medical clearance, The Citadel Physical Readiness Program (CPRP), The Citadel Physical Fitness Test (CPFT) and the Required Physical Education Program (RPEP).
Medical Clearance
All academically-accepted applicants must receive medical clearance to enroll in the Corps of Cadets at The Citadel. More information here.
The Citadel Physical Readiness Program (CPRP)
The Office of the Commandant administers the CPRP in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human performance. Based upon the idea that effective leaders take pride in their own level of physical fitness, the CPRP focuses on two crucial components: body composition and physical training (PT). Cadets must meet and maintain prescribed height and weight requirements. In addition, the Corps of Cadets must take a PT test each semester. To be classified as physically proficient, cadets must perform satisfactorily in both these areas. Physical proficiency is required in the consideration of rank in sophomore, junior and senior years, and more importantly physical proficiency is required for participation in Ring presentation and Graduation ceremonies.

The Citadel Physical Fitness Test (CPFT)
The CPFT is given at various times during each semester. In addition, a remedial physical fitness program is assigned to any cadet failing to meet minimum standards at any application of the test. Cadets must meet the minimum standards for each event of the physical fitness test to be physically proficient, which is a requirement to qualify for class privileges and graduation. There is a timed test for the push-ups, plank and 1.5 mile run events; the minimum and maximum requirements can be found below .

Required Physical Education Program (RPEP)
The RPED provides an exemplary environment and experiences which contribute to an improved quality of life for the student. The program offers basic instruction in adult and lifetime physical fitness, healthful living, physical activities, and recreational sports which are of immediate and lasting value. Each student must complete RPED 250, Contemporary Health Foundations, and RPED 251, Foundations of Fitness and Exercise, and two different activity courses.
